Like
the
1980 VW Scirocco that was given to restore, this 1975 BMW 2002 had a paint
finish that was in very poor condition. It completely lost any depth and gloss.
The texture of the paint finish was very gritty. Clearly the paint finish could
use a lot of help.
The
photos don't begin to convey the degree to which the finish needed help, unlike
the Scirocco.
What you need:
einszett Perls Shampoo
einszett Extra Paint Polish
einszett Paint Polish
einszett Glanz Wax
einszett Microfiber towels
einszett Microfiber wash mitt
Optional:
Porter Cable DA orbital or equivalent
DA polish pads
Step 1 - Wash
Before polishing can begin, the paint finish needed to be washed with
einszett Perls Shampoo
and dried thoroughly.
Step 2 - Compound Polish
This is the first major step in the Restoration process--polishing with
Extra Paint Cleaner
(formerly 'Ultra Paint Polish' as seen in the photos). Extra's cutting compound
formulation was used to remove the heavily weathered, oxidized paint layer.
Extra is aggressive but its abrasives break down as you polish for complete
control. Extra, like all einszett polishes, stays wet longer than other brands
giving you more time to polish and achieve the results you desire. It also makes
it easier to polish in warm weather without powdering or drying too fast. Extra
can be applied by hand or machine. For this project, one half of the car was
done by hand and the other using a Porter Cable Dual Action Orbital. The results
are nearly the same but the time to achieve the results differ. The DA greatly
decreases the time to polish. Either way, you will achieve dramatic results.

Step 3
- Polish
To enhance the gloss and depth in the paint finish, I followed up with
einszett
Paint Polish which is a medium level polish that reduces swirl marks. It
will remove the compound marks left by Extra, making the finish even deeper and
glossier. Paint Polish also utilizes abrasives that diminish as you polish
giving you complete control. And like Extra, it stays wet longer so that it can
be polished longer without drying and powdering.

Step 4 - Wax
Finally, the car was protected with a layer of
Glanz Wax.
Glanz Wax not only helps add more gloss but more importantly, it adds a barrier
between the paint finish and the elements the finish is bombarded with. Glanz
Wax's synthetic formulation is twice as durable as traditional carnauba waxes
and can handle the elements faced in everyday driving such as the damaging
effects of UV rays, road grime, pollution, tree sap and bird droppings. It helps
retain conditioning oils left by both polishes so your results last longer.
As you can see from the photos, the results are self-explanatory. Maximum depth
of gloss and color. The only thing you can not realize is the smoothness of the
paint--just like glass.

While this procedure could not fix all the issues this car had such as peeling
paint, it does demonstrate the ability einszett polishes have on severely
weathered finishes. Imagine what einszett can do for your car!
