1975 BMW 2002
Adel, the owner of this 1975 2002, lent us his most recent project purchas to tackle the paintwork which was highly weathered. The paintwork had the feel and look of sandpaper making it obvious that the previous owner clearly neglected the paintwork.
The following photos don't begin to translate the degree to which the paintwork needed help, unlike that of our other Restoration project, a 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco. The burgundy paintwork didn't reveal in the photos the level of oxidation.
Below are pictures taken throughout the process including "Before" and "After" pictures. The entire gallery is available here.
Step 1 - Wash
Prior to any work can be done, the surface had to be washed. Shampoos such as einszett Exclusiv Glanz Shampoo and Perls Shampoo will make sure all grime is removed so that dirt does not further aggravate the surface and cause additional scratching. After washing and drying the surface, the treatment process was started.
Step 2 - Cutting Polish
This is the first major step in the restoration process--polishing with Extra Paintwork Cleaner (formerly 'Ultra Paint Polish'). Extra is a fine cutting liquid compound designed to break through the heaviest of oxidation and surface defects. Simply pour on a little of the Extra on to the applicator and work into the surface. A Porter Cable Dual Action Orbital polisher was used as well as by hand. Both methods of application are very effective while application with a DA will reduce time and effort. Polish small sections at a time until paintwork is complete.

Step 3 - Polish
To enhance the gloss and depth in the paintwork, we applied einszett's general purpose paintwork polish Paint Polish 'Lack-Politur'. It was applied in the same manner as Extra - small sections at a time with an applicator pad or dual action orbital. After this step, the full potential of the paintwork is achieved.
Step 4 - Protect
Polishing is no longer needed. Now it's time to apply a coat of protection with our highly durable Glanz Wax. Glanz Wax will take the abuse from the environment so the paintwork below doesn't need to. This will extend the longevity of the results that have so far been achieved.
As you can see from the photos, the results are self-explanatory. Maximum depth of gloss and color. The only thing you can not realize is the smoothness of the paint--just like glass.
While einszett could not remedy all problems (i.e. pealing paint!), we hope this exemplifies once again, like our Scirocco project, that if einszett can remedy paintwork in this condition, your new car can certainly benefit as well!
